According to the Times Good University Guide 2011, the top 4 UK universities remained their same ranking positions as in the 2010 league table. All the top 10 institutions are members of the Russell Group or the 1994 Group of leading research-intensive institutions.

Lancaster University successfully made it into the top ten from 23rd place last year. It is also rated the 8th best university in the nation in The Independent League Table 2011.

The University of Bath is ranked 13th overall (same as last year). It is featured as 7th in the UK for universities targeted by the largest number of key employers in 2009-10. Bath features in the top 10 for 17 subjects out of 26 in individual subject rankings.

Robert Gordon University has risen to 46th overall, the first time the University has appeared in the top 50 of this highly regarded league table, just behind Heriot-Watt (43rd), Dundee (44th) and Stirling (45th) universities. Education at the University of Stirling is rated top in Scotland and third in the UK as a whole.

Durham University performed very well in the league table, up two places to No. 6 in The Times; and it is also rated in the top 5 for the following subjects: archaeology; chemistry; classics and ancient history; education; English; French; geography; general engineering; German; history; Italian; Iberian languages; Middle Eastern and African studies; physics and astronomy; Russian; sports science; and theology and religious studies.
